definition of the word lecture

by the Wiktionnary

From Mediaeval Latin lectura "action of reading", from Latin lectus (past participle of legere "to read"), from Proto-Indo-European *leg- "gather, collect" (cf. Greek λέγειν legein "to say, tell, speak, declare", originally, in Homer, "to pick out, select, collect, enumerate"; λέξις lexis "speech, diction;" λόγος logos "word, speech, thought, account"; Latin lignum "wood, firewood," lit. “that which is gathered”). To read is to "pick out words".
