From Middle English babewin, baboin < French babouin, or Late Latin babewynus. Of unknown origin; confer Dutch baviaan, German Pavian (“‘baboon’”), French babine (“‘lip of ape, dogs, etc.’”), dialectal German bäppe (“‘mouth’”).
