French académie < Latin acadēmīa < Ancient Greek Ἀκαδήμια (Akadēmia), a grove of trees and gymnasium outside of Athens where Plato taught; from the name of the supposed former owner of that estate, the Attic hero Akademos. Compare academe, academia, Akademeia.
