Hello. My first name is Ian and I'm an administrator here.

Quotations to do with Wiktionary

—John 1:1 NIV

“[S]o hard is it to show the various meaning and imperfection [sic] of words, when we have nothing else but words to do it by.”

“[The men of Gilead] said, ‘All right, say “Shibboleth.” ’ He said, ‘Sibboleth,’ because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan.”

—Judges 12:6 NIV

“‘When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.’

“‘The question is,’ said Alice, ‘whether you can make words mean so many different things.’

“‘The question is,’ said Humpty Dumpty, ‘which is to be master -- that's all.’

“Alice was too much puzzled to say anything; so after a minute Humpty Dumpty began again. ‘They've a temper, some of them -- particularly verbs: they're the proudest -- adjectives you can do anything with, but not verbs -- however, I can manage the whole lot of them! Impenetrability! That's what I say!’”

—Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking-Glass, Chapter VI.

“Anyone in the world can write anything they want about any subject, so you know you are getting the best possible information.”

Haitian Creole

Haitian Creole is dead simple to learn if you first know some French. I would encourage anyone interested to read the w:Haitian Creole language article on Wikipedia first, (inaccurate though it may be,) then move on to the Haitian Creole Wikipedia to get acquainted with some more vocabulary, then study the Creole Bible (harder to understand) or some other thing in Creole. We now have Haitian Creole on Wikibooks also. There is one native Creole speaker on the English Wiktionary, and that's Masterches (talkcontribs), though he is rarely on this wiki.

  • My goal is to make the English Wiktionary the best free resource on the Internet for Haitian Creole.
